Position Description:
The City of Commerce City has an internship opportunity for a GIS Intern in the GIS Division of the IT Department. This position performs tasks associated with spatial information, field data validation and mapping projects utilizing GIS and GPS technologies. Performs duties in a manner consistent with City values: Teamwork, Communication, Respect, Honesty/Integrity, Community, Competence/Knowledge, Achievement, and Creativity/Innovation. The GIS Intern is a temporary internship position lasting for up to 1,120 hours of work (~28 weeks) when working 40 hours per week). The position should be starting in June 2008 (start date can change). Benefits include on-the-job training and valuable experience.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, working knowledge of ArcView 3.x, working knowledge of ArcGIS 8.x/9.0 a plus but not required, and skill in map creation using cartographic techniques.
Current enrolled student (or recent graduate) in an accredited undergraduate/graduate college program related to GIS, geography, or a closely related field; GIS/Cartography certification desirable but not required; one year of training/experience with ArcGIS 8 or 9 software; superb cartographic skills; attention to detail; good communication skills, personable, adaptable, solution finder, able to work independently, able to efficiently manage multifaceted projects and data; GPS field data collection is desired; dedicated to a career in GIS field.
Must be able to work 30 to 40 hours per week during the hours of 8am to 5pm for summer; 20 hours per week during hours of 8am to 5pm for fall, if work is extended beyond summer. Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and have clean driving record
Hiring salary: $10.00 - $12.00/hr., DOQ/E.

IT GIS Job Description - 2008
The following describes the GIS Intern position.
MAJOR DUTIES:
• Collects GIS related data out in the field
• Performs work related to the operation and maintenance of the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS)
• Assists with the editing and maintenance of spatial databases
• Ensures the accuracy and completeness of digital data and maps
• Assists with updates and changes to reports and maps as necessary.
• May prepares GIS maps for use by various City departments
• Develops and maintains positive and constructive working relationships with City employees in various departments
• Performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, working knowledge of ArcGIS 9.x and skill in map creation using cartographic techniques
• Creating and editing spatial and attribute data using ArcMap/ArcEditor; spatial data editing in ArcSDE environment a plus
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals, perform accurate and timely data entry, read and comprehend technical information, provide effective customer service, and establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public
• Current college student or recent graduate with a concentration in GIS, geography, or a closely related field. GIS/Cartography certification desirable but not required. Previous GIS project work experience using ESRI software (ArcView, ArcMap, ArcGIS, ArcSDE) a plus
• Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license
OTHER JOB RELATED INFORMATION:
• Works under the supervision of the GIS Administrator and technical direction of the GIS Specialist / Technician who outlines work assignments, reviews work in progress and all completed work.
• For 2008, majority of work will be performed in the field driving a City vehicle performing data collection.
• The GIS Intern is a temporary internship position lasting for up to 1,120-hours of work (~28 weeks if working 40-hours per week). The position starts in June 2008 (start date can change). Desire 40 hours per week during summer, possibly going to 20-hours per week in fall after school starts until total hours expended or assigned work is completed, which every occurs first . The pay rate is $10.00 - $12.00 an hour DOQ/E. Benefits are not included in this position.
