Pitney Bowes Business Insight (formerly MapInfo and Group 1 Software) is the new software division of Pitney Bowes, Inc. This division develops software to provide customers with innovative solutions in Location Intelligence, Customer Data Quality/Data Integration, Customer Intelligence, and Customer Communication Management (CCM).  The company’s solutions are utilized by more than 3,500 organizations worldwide in numerous vertical markets; such as utilities, financial services/banking, retail, telecommunications, insurance and public sector.

Pitney Bowes Business Insight is currently seeking a Data Product Manager (DPM) to drive the business management, strategy and execution of the digital streets, geocoding and points/parcels data products businesses in the US market.  The DPM will lead the process of product creation from specification through to product launch for PBBI branded and 3rd party datasets. Additional areas of responsibility include the launch, pricing, positioning and establishment of policies with regard to new and existing product lines. The DPM also will liaise extensively with other departments in the company, including the global sales teams, global product management, data development, marketing and operations.

This position may be based out of Boulder, CO or Troy, NY.

Essential Functions:

  • Defines optimal product mix, product positioning and product roadmap as a guide for sales, marketing and corporate planning.
  • Develops and evaluates product enhancements options and recommends appropriate product strategies, making tradeoffs between functionality and available resources.
  • Timely creation of product information, features, benefits, and competitive positioning. Includes working with:
    • External Customers - product information and support, understanding business problems and the application of PBBI technology to solve those business problems
    • Internal Customers (Sales) - functional product issues, competition, field input on applications and competition, Sales training (applications, product attributes and benefits, processes and procedures),
    • Data Development Department - Market Requirements Documents, strategic direction, revenue analysis by product
    • Technical Writing Group - technical product documentation, white papers
    • Marketing - Support the development or enhancement of marketing collateral, including Web content, package design, brochures, fact-sheets, pricing
    • Product Launch - pricing, packaging, competitive landscape
  • Research and become an authoritative data source for competitive product offerings, pricing, delivery and support, advertising and marketing strategies.
  • Proactively Manage Data Supplier relationships
    • Regular meetings (phone and in person) as needed to discuss supply of data, product revenues, pricing strategies, new applications.
    • Overall management of relationships with data providers (and 3rd party contractors) to ensure timely delivery of product created to specification.
  • Negotiation of unique pricing situations.
  • Investigation of customer issues and complaints and ensuring that appropriate remedial action is taken.
  • Contribute to the development of Global Product Management Best Practices and processes

Education/Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3 years of technical product management experience in the software or GIS industry
  • Knowledge of product specifications, collecting and writing up market requirements
  • Ability to work with little supervision and multi-task
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and written and proficiency in MS Office
  • Experience with database management (e.g. Access)
  • Some travel required

Specialized Skills and Experience:

  • Commercial awareness and appreciation of sales issues
  • Understanding of contracts, pricing and licensing preferred
  • Experience working with GIS products and data (e.g. MapInfo or other GIS packages) a plus
  • Understanding of geocoding, spatial and non spatial data a plus
  • Understanding of business practices outside the United States
  • Problem solving and analytical capability
