Department Overview:
The City of Seattle is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Web GIS Administrator in Seattle Information Technology (Seattle IT).  Seattle IT provides technology leadership for the City enterprise, developing common standards, architectures, and business solutions; focused on developing scalable, sustainable solutions that enable departments to deliver City services more efficiently and effectively to constituents.  Seattle IT harnesses the power of technology and telecommunications to facilitate City government serving Seattle’s residents and businesses.  Seattle IT is responsible for citywide technology governance, strategic planning and policy development, and programs that promote technology literacy and public access to government information.  Seattle IT manages the City’s technology infrastructure which includes the City’s data center, communications networks, end user support, cable office, municipal television channel, and customer service activities.  The City’s consolidated IT operations is 700 strong providing professional technology services across City government and beyond.  We are looking for a talented professional who has a passion for service, community, and technology to join our exciting team!

Position Description:
Seattle IT’s GIS Section is currently seeking a Senior Web GIS Administrator to perform system architecture, upgrade, maintenance and technical support functions as a member of the Spatial Data Services team.  The successful candidate will design, deploy and administer web GIS server systems for use by all City departments and provide backup support for administrators of GIS databases and desktop GIS software.  The applicant should be prepared to work independently and as part of multiple teams.
Job Responsibilities:

Under minimal supervision employee will:

Design, deploy and administer GIS web server systems for City use
Debug and resolve GIS web server outages, slowdowns and other citywide GIS server system problems
Update City GIS server software and maintain according to performance and security best practices
Research, design, and implement major GIS technologies for City use
Advise IT professionals and managers throughout City government on information technology implementation projects and planning efforts with respect to utilization of GIS and to its integration with City information systems
Design, develop and deploy automated processes for monitoring system status, notification of system problems, and synchronization of databases for City departments
Provide back-up support for GIS Data Administrator and GIS Software Administrator
Collaborate with the rest of the administration team to administer all aspects of the City’s GIS environment, including data, software, applications, web services, batch processing jobs, and servers.
QualificationsNOTE:  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for the required qualifications except where specifically noted.

Education:  BA or BS in Geography (GIS), Computer Science or related field.


6 years GIS experience with the Esri software suite (including extensive experience with ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online).
6 years experience developing, deploying and administering batch processes using Python or similar tools
Experience administering ArcGIS Server in a complex enterprise environment with multiple business system interfaces
Experience configuring and administering Web servers
Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear and common language
Demonstrated success in problem solving and troubleshooting
Willingness and ability to perform off-hours work as needed for maintenance and response to system failures and outages
Demonstrated success as a member of an enterprise technical support team as well as ad hoc project teams
Desired Qualifications:

Experience with municipal and utility applications of GIS
Team leadership and project management experience
Thorough knowledge of database concepts, database design, data modeling, and system architecture
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Capability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment
