Full time temporary position working as a Great Lakes Environmental Center contract employee for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Water Resources Division, Surface Water Section (SWAS). The employment contract is scheduled to run from June through December 2017. Location is MDEQ office in Lansing, Michigan.

Responsibilities:  Coordination, management, and maintenance of the geographic information system (GIS) utilized by SWAS staff to support monitoring Michigan’s watersheds, pursuant to the DEQ’s Water Quality Monitoring Strategy.  Create, compile, analyze, and maintain SWAS geospatial data; develop and maintain field data collection applications; imagery interpretation, desktop reconnaissance, and technical support for biological and water quality monitoring; maintain ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server environments; conduct staff GIS training and support field investigations; serve on DEQ GIS committee; and support spatial data components of DEQ reports to USEPA.

Education Requirement: B.S. in Biology, Fisheries and/or Wildlife, Physical Geography or Geographic Information Systems, Geological Sciences, Natural Resources Management, other Natural or Physical Sciences, Resource Development and related specializations.

Required Skills and Experience: Esri ArcGIS® applications including ArcMap and ArcGIS Online. Designing and maintaining geodatabases.  Experience collecting and processing GPS data using handheld and backpack units.  Satellite/aerial imagery and topographic map interpretation. Familiarity with Microsoft Office® applications, including Access. Good oral and written communication and problem solving skills. Familiarity with the operation of aquatic field sampling equipment.

Preferred Experience: Conducting natural resources investigations and other environmental field assessments. Proficiency with Adobe® graphics programs. Experience in conducting natural resources and other environmental field assessments, including experience with trailering boats, outboard motors, and operating light-duty trucks.

This position may require travel and requires a valid driver’s license.  The position is temporary but may lead to a permanent opportunity.
