Startup consulting company is seeking one part-time UX and also one part-time UI designer to assist in the creation of an exciting and potentially very disruptive online GIS-based service.  Like many startups, the position is initially unpaid, but the statement of work legally stipulates monetary equity in the project, and also compensation when the project receives funding and or clients.

UX Position Description

Define UX standards, identify requirements, and propose and test solutions that translate business needs into engaging user experiences on screens of all sizes.

• Produce a desktop and mobile application for the product,

• HTML & CSS coding for a first of a kind prototype interactive GIS product.

• Develop and maintain design wireframes, prototypes, mockups, screen flows, sitemaps.

• Assist in developing strategic objectives and goals.

• Create and run user research, conduct usability testing, remotely and in person.  Analyze results and communicate findings to project team.

• Present and explain design concepts to project team.

• Assist in developing post-launch success metrics, and translate them into requirements and plans.

• Use qualitative and quantitative data to inform designs and solutions.

• Manage the user experience throughout the lifecycle of the product.

• Define enterprise UX practices and standards.

• Maintain confidentiality of information.

UI Position Description

Lead the UI design on the GIS-based product.  Define the visual direction and architecture of design systems that support the launch and scale of the product.  Work collaboratively with UX designers and content writers to deliver outcomes. Requires a strong understanding of user interface best-practices, experience working with developers, and a high-degree of visual design skill. You will focus on how the entire product will look and feel.

• Build a new UI for a non-existent product.

• Conceive and implement the visual language of the project. Create and advance site-wide style guides.

• With business analysts, develop and maintain detailed user interface requirements in the form of user stories and acceptance criteria.

• Develop UI sketches for desktop, tablet, and mobile phone sizes to show user and screen flow, navigation, and interaction details.  Quickly turn around new design candidates

• Implement best-practices to support user expectation, interaction and task success.

• Maintain confidentiality of information.


• GIS-related UX or UI experience is strongly desired.

• At least 5 years of experience as a UX or UI designer.

• Undergraduate or graduate degree in human-computer interaction, graphic design, interaction design or web design.

• Experience creating graphic design for sites/applications from the ground up, including logo/identity design.

• Experience creating design pattern libraries and style guides.

• Experience building HTML prototypes (including CSS, JavaScript, JSF, and JQuery) for usability testing.

• A portfolio demonstrating innovation in problems you have solved, and the ability to verbally describe both the problems and the solutions you designed.

• Outstanding UX/UI design skills with an excellent facility for defining and solving problems.

• An understanding of fundamental design principles such as layout, visual hierarchy, typography, and color.

• Experience planning, conducting, and analyzing usability tests.

• Proficiency with prototyping tools such as Sketch, Invision, Balsamiq, Axure, UX Pin, Framer, Origami, Principle, Flinto, etc.

• Understanding of technical concepts of back-end development, and understanding and knowledge of front-end development (HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc.).

• Have designed for a variety of mediums including digital products, responsive websites, and mobile applications.
