As part of our research division, you’ll work alongside a unique group of scientists across engineering, earth, hydrological, and atmospheric sciences to protect the value of FM Global’s clients’ businesses by developing methods to identify hazards, assess risk, and produce loss prevention solutions that are efficient and cost-effective.

Interested in a career with our Structures and Natural Hazards group? We have openings for planning, coordinating, and conducting in-house and external GIS support of natural hazards research.

Positions require at least a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Urban Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, or another field with experience in practical applications of GIS to solve problems in Natural Hazards , and a good research track record.

Tasks may include obtaining, processing, formatting, and analyzing vector and raster datasets, geo-referencing maps and aerial photographs, digitizing, preparing input data for various natural hazard models, and post-processing model output to create maps, including developing scripts to automate tasks.

Candidates are required to have experience with the ArcGIS software suite, technical programming/scripting with python and other languages, automated processing and analyzing, geodatabase management, and demonstrated ability to deal with large datasets.

Applicants must have demonstrated project management abilities and excellent written and verbal communication skills. It is desirable to have some background in statistics, familiarity with Open GIS tools and libraries such as GDAL (including OGR), QGIS, and familiarity with 3D GIS data and extracting and processing OpenStreetMap data. Experience with GCM output data formats such as NetCDF, HDF, and Grib is highly prized.
